Natural pedagogy as evolutionary adaptation

WebWe propose that the cognitive mechanisms that enable the transmission of cultural knowledge by communication between individuals constitute a system of 'natural pedagogy' in humans, and represent an evolutionary adaptation along the hominin lineage. We discuss three kinds of arguments that support this hypothesis. WebAbstract. The emphasis of the present chapter lies on a neglected feature that can be found throughout evolution. Evolutionary change is to be characterized not only in terms of adaptations to given environments, but also in terms of changes in the degree of autonomy of individual organisms.

Evolutionary Adaptation and Positive Selection in Humans

Webbiological adaptation for teaching: it was favoured by natural selection operating on genetic variants because it enhanced the fidelity of cultural inheritance (Csibra and Gergely 2011). When summarizing the components of the natural pedagogy package, Csibra and Gergely use three headings: ostension, reference, and relevance. Webinconsistencies in how natural pedagogy, and more particularly the “genericity bias” hypothesis, has been put to work for explaining different phenomena. Webadaptation, in biology, the process by which a species becomes fitted to its environment; it is the result of natural selection’s acting upon heritable variation over several generations. Organisms are adapted to their environments in a great variety of ways: in their structure, physiology, and genetics, in their locomotion or dispersal, in their means of defense and … WebThe natural pedagogy hypothesis proposes that human infants preferentially attend to communicative signals from others, facilitating rapid cultural learning. In this view, sensitivity to such signals is a uniquely human adaptation and as such nonhuman animals should not produce or utilize these communicative signals.
