Supposedly the only castle in the north of England not to fall to the Scots, it also served as a military barracks during the Napoleonic Wars. The castle is now owned by English Heritage and is open to visitors from spring to autumn. Prudhoe Castle was a civil parish: in 1951 the parish had a population of 1005. Prudhoe Castle was formerly a township; from 1866 Prudhoe Castle was a civil parish in its own right until it was abolished on 1 April 1974 and merged with Prudhoe.
