Theoretical glaciology
Glaciology (from Latin glacies 'frost, ice', and Ancient Greek λόγος (logos) 'subject matter'; lit. 'study of ice') is the scientific study of glaciers, or more generally ice and natural phenomena that involve ice. Glaciology is an interdisciplinary Earth science that integrates geophysics, geology, physical geography, geomorphology, climatology, meteorology, hydrolo… WebbVarious theories of glacier flow have been used to predict widely different changes of velocity with depth. The paper describes a direct measurement of the vertical velocity distribution in a glacier in the Bernese Oberland. Using an electric heating element, a vertical hole 137 in long was melted from the glacier surface to the rock-bed.
